Since we are talking about roads on the PE blog today, I thought it would be an idea to do the same here. This sign is on the road to the Seal Point Lighthouse. The R5 coin is about 30mm in diameter. The "Kimberley se gat" is a colloquial reference to the great hole of Kimberley, an enormous abandoned diamond mine.
What they fail to mention is certain other less cute creatures that can be found there, like this mean looking Puffadder! Most snakes will get out of your way if they hear you coming, but Puffadders are lazy and would rather wait till you are close enough to bite, so you have to be very alert when walking through the bush, and particularly in dead leaves, where they are very hard to spot.

I've been on that little piece of road. Non of the descriptions are off. I have seen the little plovers (well you can barely see them)and the little tortoises... well can get totally lost in the potholes(so will a couple of small cars).
Amazing snake's photo! This snake looks like a rattlesnake, in Portuguese, "cobra cascavel". It's a very venomous species in Brazil.
That's a great sign. We do need reminding about these wee little bits of wildlife sometimes.

The puffadder and rattlesnake are closely related, this is also very venemous. We once saw a drunk guy on the side of the road teasing one that had been hit with a stick, and he thought it was dead. It strikes so fast you can hardly see its head, and we took him to a nearby fire station for help. By the time the ambulance arrived, his arm already looked like a balloon! We were taking a bunch of brain damaged adults from a nearby home to see our horses at the time. Needless to say they were like kids in a candy store with all the excitement, they got to go in a fire-engine, and learn not to mess with snakes, even if they look dead!
yes Pat you are right, people race along as if they have a train to catch, and forget that these little residents have a right to some safety in their own home!
